Latest Numbers on COVID-19 Cases in OECD Countries (2020-05-05)

As the COVID-19 pandemic gradually subsides there arises an opportunity to assess more accurately the history of each country’s success or failure in the fight against the virus. Slovakia deserves a special attention. According to official figures, this country of the so-called Visegrad Group is not only clearly ahead of its neighbors, which also have coped quite well with the spread of the virus – but is also among the best in comparison to Asia and Oceania.
United Kingdom and France, meanwhile, continue to catch up with Italy in terms of both morbidity and mortality, which was initially considered to be the most affected country. However, Italy has now been overtaken by Belgium and Spain among the worst affected for some time. Now France and the United Kingdom continue to stand out among the countries with the lowest testing intensity. The latter is almost twice lower here than in Italy, Spain and Belgium and is already about three times lower than in Lithuania.
In absolute terms though the United States is likely the most to suffer from the virus. According to relative figures the situation in America is not worse, but better or at least the same as in many European countries. On the other hand, the figures in neighboring Canada show that the United States really cannot be happy with its performance either. Canadian situation is about twice as better as in the US.
